The Center First United Methodist Church will host Sacred Sounds of the Season Thursday December 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Musicians and singers from community churches will share their talents. Everyone is invited to attend this special program that is sure to get you in the holiday spirit of this season. Santa Clause is coming to town this Saturday, December 5.  Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade Committee Chairman Randy Collard reports that during the parade afternoon the Daughters of the Republic William Carroll Crawford Chapter will host tours of the First Ladies in Texas Building on the historic downtown Center square beginning at prior to Santa’s Christmas Parade, presented by Shelby Savings Bank. 

According to Collard, Grand Marshal Alease Copelin, 2015 Distinguished Service Award recipient, will lead the parade at 6:00 p.m. The Grand Marshal vehicle is sponsored by Farmers State Bank. Over 20 floats and features will make their way through the heart of town to delight the young and old alike. Parade winners will be announced via media on Monday.

On 11/28/15 at 9:35 am, Lufkin DPS Communications received a report of a one vehicle crash on US 59 at the Neches River Bridge on the Polk County side of the river. The preliminary crash investigation indicates that a 2014 Dodge passenger car was traveling northbound on US 59 when the vehicle left the roadway to the left and subsequently drove into the river. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Adrian Segura (23), from Lufkin, TX, who was not injured during the crash. The driver reported that he was traveling with Markus Smith (23), also from Lufkin, TX. Smith has not been located at this time after an intensive search of the Neches River that was conducted on 11/28/15 and is currently still underway by Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Polk County DPS Troopers, Angelina County DPS Troopers and the Nacogdoches Fire Department Dive Team. The crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.

Feye Strong, 58, of Shelbyville, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Bobbye Emken, 89, of Joaquin formerly of Galveston, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Green Acres Nursing Home.

She was also a member of American Ex-Prisoners of War and Titus Harris (Bataan) Medical Society.

The Panola men’s basketball team lost to Lamar State Port Arthur here Tuesday night. 89-73. The loss drops the Ponies record to 7-3 and 1-1 in Region XIV play. “We really struggled in the second half to find a rhythm.” Said Head Coach Grant McMillan. “We gave up 20 offensive boards in the game. It’s tough to win giving other teams that many extra possessions.” He added.

After a seesaw first half, Panola trailed heading into the locker rooms 36-30. After getting down by 10 points on multiple occasions in the second half the Ponies cut the lead to 62-60 with 6:52 remaining in the game. Port Arthur went on a 7-0 run and Panola could not get any closer.

Offensively, Panola was led by Charles Tucker (Lansing, Michigan) with 15 points. Terry Holt (Nashville, Tennessee) scored in double figures for the fourth straight game netting 13 . Tope Arikawe (Nigeria) and Chan Williams-Bey (Hartford, Connecticut) also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Jonathan Wiley (Houston, Texas) chased down 10 rebounds in the loss. As a team Panola gave up 20 offensive rebounds and was forced into 17 turnovers.

Panola will next be in action this upcoming Friday, November 27^th  as they head to Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas to play in their Thanksgiving Classic. The Ponies will take on Cedar Valley at 5:00 PM on the campus of Angelina College.

The Panola College Alumni Association is proud to announce the selection of Dr. Danny Paul Windham as the 2015 Panola College Alumnus of the Year. Dr. Windham will be recognized at the Panola College commencement ceremony scheduled for Thursday, December 11, at 7pm in the Carthage Civic Center.

Dr. Danny Paul Windham graduated from Panola College with an Associate in Science Degree in May of 1974. After graduating from Little Cypress Mauriceville High School in 1972 he moved to Center, Texas to live with his grandmother, Lulie Windham, while attending Panola College. The drive from Center to Carthage to attend college was a quick commute. Dr. Danny Paul recalls the college had bells that rang as a sign that class time was over-much like high school.

The class size was small allowing for the students to get acquainted with the professors. Mrs. Shephard was an English professor he recalls with fondness. Mrs. Shephard was also the sister of his first grade teacher, Mrs. Strahan, at Little Cypress. He remembers Dr. Robertson, his Botany instructor as an inspiration. Texas Governor Dolph Brisco was the speaker at his graduation ceremony in 1974.

Dr. Danny Paul continued his education graduating from Stephen F. Austin University in 1976. In 1980 he completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Texas.

For thirty five years Dr. Danny Paul has practiced Dentistry in Center, Texas.

In 2008 his daughter, Dr. Anna Joy Shirley joined him. Dr. Brett Shirley, son-in-law, is an Oral- Maxillofacial Surgeon. Dr. Brett is an important part of the practice. In 2012 his son, Dr. Clayton Paul Windham and wife Jackie joined the practice. Jackie is a Registered Dental Hygienist. Windham Family is truly a family practice!

Dr. Windham and wife of 36 years, Sally, have four grandchildren: McCann Clay and Holt Jackson Shirley and Everly Joy and William Clayton (Liam) Windham.

Presently, Dr. Danny Paul is the President of the East Texas Dental Society, a member of the Pineywoods Study Club, the American Dental Association, and the Texas Dental Association. As a 35 year member of the Center Noon Lion's club he serves as the Tail Twister. Dr. Windham is also a 35 year member of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce for which he is the Entertainment Chairman for the East Texas Poultry Festival. He makes sure the Francis Oates Stage is full of musical entertainment throughout the festival. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Center, Texas and serves on the Pastoral Committee. He is a committee member for the Shelby County Cookers and the Shelby County Ducks Unlimited.

Dr. Windham is the 2015 Shelby County's People's Choice Dentist of the Year.

Music is a large part of his life. Dr. Windham enjoys music and is a seasoned song writer. His band, Danny Paul Windham and the Pine Hill Review, perform throughout the area.

“I am truly honored to be chosen the Panola College Alumnus of the Year,” stated Dr. Windham.

Shelby County’s own The Singing Christians/Mercy River Boys were inducted into the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame earlier this month in ceremonies in Dallas.  Frank Horton, Calvin Christian and Wayne Christian, originally of Tenaha, were present with several other former members to receive the award and present a mini-concert for the first time for most in over 38 years.  Other members of the group from Shelby County over the years include, Jack and Bettie Christian (founding members), Mike Ramsey, Dickie Gilchrist, and Richard Adams.  Now Deceased members included founding manager James E. Christian as well as Joe Dan Womack (also a founding member), Bill Horton and Billy Brooks.

Wayne Christian was additionally individually inducted into the hall of fame. While all the 1970s and early 1980s, you could find them singing with his band The Singing Christians, later named, The Mercy River Boys, which was a two-time finalist for the National GMA Dove Award as group of the year; once in 1979 and again in 1980. Also in 1979, The Mercy River Boys were finalist for the Grammy Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. But Wayne’s involvement went beyond just singing; he was also active with the Gospel Music Association and served on the National Board of Directors from 1976 to 1979 and after their over one dozen professional recordings a voting member of NARAS (National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences).

Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle would like to announce multiple arrests and the closure of three (3) juvenile sex crime cases by DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division. 

The first pair of arrests involve a husband and wife, identified as James Matthew Pittman (W/M - DOB: 06/05/1976) and Rhydonia Gullette Pittman (W/F - DOB: 03/14/1985) both of Keithville, LA.  Following a complaint from an outside party, an investigation was initiated by a juvenile sex crimes detective.  It was found through the investigation that a juvenile subject related to Mr. & Mrs. Pittman was sexually exploited within DeSoto Parish.  At the conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Pittman was placed under arrest for LA R.S. 14:42 First Degree Rape and LA R.S. 14:81.2 Molestation of a Juvenile.  Mrs. Pittman was placed under arrest for LA R.S. 14:42 First Degree Rape.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Pittman were booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center.

The second arrest involved a subject identified as Damarcus Williams (B/M - DOB: 01/16/1995) of Frierson, LA.  A complaint was initiated by a parent of a juvenile at the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office.  Following an investigation by the juvenile sex crimes detective, it was found that Mr. Williams had illegal sexual contact with the juvenile.  He was placed under arrest for LA R.S. 14:80 Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile and booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center.

The third arrest was the result of an investigation to a complaint filed by a parent of a juvenile.  The detective found that a subject, identified as Steve Robert Ranney (W/M - DOB: 08/13/1980) of Shreveport, LA, had sexual contact with a juvenile while in DeSoto Parish.  Mr. Ranney was arrested for LA R.S. 14:92 Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile and LA R.S. 14:81 Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile.  He was also booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center.

A $10 million construction project on SH 7 will continue as concrete for culvert extensions is scheduled to be poured in coming days that will reconstruct existing pavement and result in the addition of shoulders and passing lanes to the much traveled roadway.

Pinto Construction is the contractor for the project that should be completed in about a year, weather permitting. The project length on SH 7 in Houston County includes just over 7 miles and ends at FM 2781 in Kennard.

Motorists are advised to slow down through the construction zone, obey all signage and prepare for delays as workers and heavy machinery work through the area.

ANGELINA COUNTY

BU 59: Contractors will continue to work on placing retaining walls and subgrade in the southbound lanes as the project moves toward replacing the railroad bridge.

SL 287: Contractors will begin treating subgrade on the SL 287 eastbound main lanes beginning at the Moffett bridge and continuing westward. The bridge crew will continue to place deck panels on the recently placed U-turn bridge beams.

US 59 at Redland: Lime treatments are scheduled and workers will place storm sewers for the southbound main lanes.

SH 7 East: Maintenance base repairs

FM 706: Contractor crews will continue safety treating fixed objects from US 69 to SH 103.

Various locations: Street sweeping, debris removal.

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY

US 59: Contractors continue to work from SL 224 to 1.3 miles south of the loop on US 59 and on SL 224 from US 59 to SH 7 West. Work is scheduled to continue on the westbound exit ramp and crews are preparing the right-of-way on US 59 in advance of construction at Spradley Street to widen the roadway. Utility crews also continue to work through the area.

SL 224/US 59: From SH 7 East to US 259 crews will continue to work on guard rails and culverts throughout the project at various locations.

FM 1878: Construction on Starr Avenue from North Street to Clark Boulevard is scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving holiday as crews continue to relocate utilities.

FM 1275: Railroad maintenance and edge and shoulder leveling.

POLK COUNTY

US 287: Crews are placing asphalt on driveways through the project that will add left and right turn lanes at the OSB plant entrance.

FM 1988: Work will continue as crews place drill shafts to replace the bridge.

Various locations: Crews will continue to work at Hubert Cemetery Road over Dickens Branch, at Kelly Road over Menard Creek to set beams for a new bridge and will complete pouring concrete at Soda Loop over Bluff Creek for a bridge replacement there.

Various locations: Patching potholes, leveling of roadways and debris removal.

TRINITY COUNTY

SH 94: Contractors will continue to safety treat fixed objects, including work on guardrails at White Rock Creek and Sandy Creek from SH 19 to US 287 as well as from US 287 to 1.6 mile west of FM 358.

FM 2262: Maintaining shoulders, patching and sign repair.

HOUSTON COUNTY

US 287: Contractors are completing work to improve guardrail to design standards and safety treat fixed objects from Loop 304 to the Trinity County line.

SH 21: Construction will continue as contractors frame for culvert extensions and pour concrete along the project area from FM 1280 to just east of FM 2967.

SH 21 West: Maintenance crews will work to level up roadway

FM 2967: Maintenance crews will level up roadway and do base repairs

FM 232: Maintenance and repair on culvert joints

SAN JACINTO COUNTY

US 59 at FM 2914: Crews will haul embankment and install retaining walls for the overpass.

Various locations: Maintenance crews will be working on drainage issues and cleaning culverts and ditches.

SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY

US 96 at Ayish Bayou: Contractors are preparing the shoulder of the road in preparation for construction of a new bridge.

SH 21 at US 96: Contractors are installing concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk and finishing driveways through the project that redesigned the intersection.

Various locations: Maintenance will work on debris removal.

SHELBY COUNTY

US 84 TX/LA bridge: The eastbound deck has been completed and the railing is being constructed. Concrete is being placed in Louisiana with First Avenue scheduled to open on the eastbound side within the week.

Loop 500: Hot mix overlay from SH 7 to US 87.

FM 139: Crews will be safety treating fixed objects from SH 7 to SH 87 including work on cross drainage structures, guardrails and driveways throughout the project.

CR 4323: Contractors have completed constructing relief bridges for Flat Fork Creek. They are expected to continue work on the bridge approaches as weather permits.

SABINE COUNTY

The “Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER)” was recently revised and updated and effective October 11, 2015.  A major change in the revision now requires all food employees to complete an accredited food handlers training program within 60 days of employment, effective September 16, 2016. 

A food handlers course accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services is being offered by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Shelby County.  Food Safety: It’s In Your Hands is scheduled for both Wednesday, December 9^th and 16^th starting at 9:00 a.m. at the active Shelby County Courthouse, 2^nd floor meeting room. 

This one 2-hour course will now be required for all food service employees to help promote the service of safe food. The certificate is good for 2 years and is valid anywhere in the State of Texas. The course is a basic overview of food safety practices that are necessary to ensure that safe food is served at your establishment. Practices discussed include good personal hygiene, cross contamination, and time and temperature abuse.

On Saturday (11/21/15) at around 6 PM, Angelina County DPS Troopers responded to and are currently investigating a crash that occurred on FM 2251, where a citizen was struck by a vehicle while riding a horse. The only available information at this time is that the vehicle is possibly a silver truck which failed to stop and render aid and fled the scene traveling southbound on FM 2251 with damage to the front portion of the vehicle. DPS officers are requesting anyone with any information about the driver and/or the vehicle to please contact DPS at (936) 699-7340.

Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle would like to announce a raid conducted in the city limits of Mansfield, LA in the early morning hours of November 20, 2015. This raid consisted of executing four (4) search warrants by DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office SWAT and Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office SWAT on different locations simultaneously in reference to suspected criminal activity.  Two subjects were arrested during the execution of the warrants for Resisting an Officer by Interference.  They are identified as Sky Debonaire Jones (B/M - DOB: 01/18/1987) of Mansfield, LA and Quarerius Diontre Adams (B/M - DOB: 12/07/1995) of Mansfield, LA.  The investigation into the criminal activity is ongoing and more arrests are expected.

With Fall in full swing and winter approaching, East Texans could likely see deer and wildlife in or near the roadway. The Texas Department of Transportation wants drivers to be alert to the facts of motor vehicle crashes involving wildlife and offers driving tips to help insure a safe trip through the Pineywoods.

In Texas, about 6,700 crashes a year involve wildlife, resulting in about 17 fatalities. TxDOT urges drivers to be vigilant as they drive through areas known to be inhabited by deer, especially in the Fall mating season that is known to be from October to December in conjunction with hunting season. A few tips that could help you avoid accidents with wildlife include:

-Slow down when entering wildlife populated areas. Headlights have an illumination range of 200 to 250 feet. To allow for sufficient brake time, reduce your speed to 45 mph at night when driving through areas heavily populated by wildlife and to 30 mph when roads are wet, foggy, or icy.

-Scan ahead and watch for movement along roadsides. Deer and other wildlife are more active from 6 p.m. to midnight. If you are alone on the road at night, use high-beam headlights and stay alert. Keep in mind that if you see one deer, more deer are likely nearby.

-Pay attention to shoulders. Even though wildlife may be off to the side as your car approaches, animals may suddenly attempt to flee by running into the roadway. Slow as you approach, and use your horn which could scare them back into the woods.

-Brake, don't swerve. Swerving increases the chance of rolling your vehicle or going into oncoming traffic.

-Avoid the use of cell phones while driving. If you are distracted the chances increase that you will not have time to react properly.

-Always wear a seatbelt. It will help protect you from injury should you collide with an animal.

-Do not approach an injured deer should you collide with one. They can act erratically. Instead, call the police or authorities for help.

It's easy to accidentally hit animals while driving, but with a little bit of knowledge, it's sometimes preventable.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved $95,000 Thursday for San Augustine County airport improvements.

Commissioners approved the funding at their November meeting in Austin and earmarked the money for engineering/design for pavement improvements at the airport. A project consultant will be named later this year.

The project costs will be funded through San Augustine County and TxDOT's Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state's general aviation system.

TxDOT expects this year to provide approximately $60 million in funding for planning, constructing and maintaining approximately 275 community airports in Texas that are eligible for funding.

More than three million flight hours are logged in arrivals and departures each year from Texas community airports which additionally provide aircraft facilities for agricultural, medical, business and commuter use.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved nine roadway improvement projects using Proposition 1 funding. The projects, totaling almost $437 million worth of roadway construction, rehabilitation and restoration, will enhance the safety, mobility and connectivity in our state. Commissioners have now approved final contract awards on 131 of the approximately 200 planned Proposition 1 projects across the state.

 “The Commission and TxDOT continue to deliver needed transportation projects that will greatly benefit Texas drivers and the state’s economy,” said TxDOT Executive Director LtGen Joe Weber, USMC (Ret). “The message from community leaders and local planning organizations, as well as the message sent by voters when they approved Proposition 1 last November, is that transportation concerns must be addressed in a manner that is both efficient and effective. Our efforts continue to prove we hear and understand that message.”

Proposition 1, which dedicates a portion of oil and gas tax revenue to the state highway fund, was approved last November by Texas voters. The 200 planned Proposition 1 projects will result in more than 800 miles of rehabilitated highways; nearly 500 miles of new highway lanes; 114 bridges replaced, widened or rehabilitated; and an additional 159 miles of passing lanes on rural highways. Metropolitan Planning Organizations and TxDOT districts worked together and with the public to formulate the list of projects.

Many TxDOT districts plan to use maintenance funds to repair or rehabilitate highways affected by production in energy sectors. These funds, along with Proposition 1 funds specifically allocated for energy sector needs, will allow projects in impacted areas to receive nearly 30 percent of total 2015 Proposition 1 funding.

In addition to addressing congestion, Proposition 1 funding also addresses safety. Over the past five years, there were 248 fatalities and more than 23,000 crashes on the highway segments where these Proposition 1 funded projects are located. The work planned in these areas is designed to enhance safety for drivers and reduce the number of crashes, fatalities and injuries.

Sometime between the dates of October 10, 2015 and November 4^th, suspect(s) unknown burglarized the residence of the late Shorty Goings located on County Road 2517 in Shelbyville, Texas.

Suspect(s) unknown illegally appropriated the following property: a 2003 Honda Rubicon, a 2006 Cub Cadet Zero Turn Lawnmower, Stihl weedeater, Echo gas blower, white microwave, Mr. Coffee coffee pot, a Craftsman tool cabinet (4 drawer), a Craftsman top chest (9 drawer), miscellaneous tools, an Orion telescope, (3) battery chargers, a Huskey air compressor, various pots/pans, kitchen items, rugs, cast iron dutch oven, along with several firearms. The County Commissioner Precinct 1 Roscoe McSwain would like to notify the public that the Mill Creek Bridge on County Road 1006 is now closed for repairs. The State will be building a new bridge beginning on Dec 7 and construction will last about 10 weeks.

Two East Texas men were arrested on Nov. 4 and Nov. 13 and charged with felony theft of livestock after stealing three cows from a Carthage, Texas rancher.

This case was jointly investigated by Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Special Ranger Larry Hand and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Investigators DJ Dickerson and Kevin Windham.

According to Hand, on Oct. 30 the victim realized that three of his cows were missing from a pasture he leases in Shelby County. The victim called TSCRA Market Inspector Pat McGuigan to share this information, and McGuigan contacted Hand who requested the victim file a report with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Hand maintained contact through the weekend with the victim and TSCRA Market Inspectors Mike Witcher and McGuigan. Since two out of the three missing cows were branded, Witcher readily remembered inspecting the cattle as they went through the Nacogdoches Livestock Exchange on Oct. 29.

Hand interviewed Nacogdoches Livestock Auction Exchange employees. It was revealed that the suspects Christopher Lance Askew, 30, and Derrek Monroe Hughes, 25, gave the employees inconsistent statements, so they documented the sellers in case of future problems. This documentation eventually led to the names of the suspects.

Hand gathered evidence and statements in neighboring counties while Dickerson and Windham worked through information and intelligence locally. These combined efforts led to arrest warrants being issued for Askew on Nov. 4.

After receiving a call from a citizen on Nov. 4, Hand, Dickerson, Windham and Shelby County Chief Deputy Shad Sparks responded to the scene where they found Askew passed out behind the wheel of a pickup in the middle of a public road with the engine running. After resisting arrest, the suspect was eventually placed under arrest for felony theft of livestock, felony driving while intoxicated (DWI), resisting arrests, obstruction of a passageway and four counts of felony and misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine, codeine, PCP and marijuana.                                                                                                                                   

Authorities identified the trailer used to haul the stolen cows along with the collection of other evidence. This led to an arrest warrant being issued on Hughes, the second suspect, who was not immediately located. Dickerson placed Hughes on the local crime stoppers list and Hughes turned himself into deputies on Nov. 13.

Hughes was placed in the Shelby County Jail on a $10,000 bond and Askew was placed in the Shelby County jail on eight different bonds totaling $165,000. Hand coordinated with the victim to identify and photograph the stolen cattle once their location was obtained. Two of the three stolen cows were recovered and returned to the victim.

“This case provides a great example of TSCRA Special Rangers working closely with TSCRA Market Inspectors, local investigators and livestock markets to arrest thieves and return stolen cattle to the rightful owner,” said Hand. “Identification of the cows was easier in this case since two of three stolen cattle were branded. I can’t stress enough how important it is for ranchers to brand and keep a close watch over their cattle.”

TSCRA appreciates the assistance and hard work of authorities of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office: Sgt. Dickerson; Investigator Windham; Sgt. Derek Barbee; Deputy Roy Bailey; Chief Deputy Sparks; and employees of the Nacogdoches Livestock Exchange, especially Lead Clerk Lynnelle McElroy.

TSCRA has 30 special rangers stationed strategically throughout Texas and Oklahoma who have in-depth knowledge of the cattle industry and are trained in all facets of law enforcement. All are commissioned as Special Rangers by the Texas Department of Public Safety and/or the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Tenaha ISD Honors All Veterans

The Tenaha ISD Junior High and High School Beta Club presented the annual
Veterans Day Program on Nov 11th.   The students presented a brief history
of the wars America has fought.  The students also set up an Honor Table to
symbolize the veterans who did not return home from duty. 

The Roarin' Band from Tiger Land showed their support to Veterans through
their performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Armed Forces on
Parade."  Band member JR Wagstaff played Taps.

Tenaha Third grade class honored all Veterans by singing a song about the
Constitution.  The Tenaha Fourth graders expressed their gratitude to all
Veterans with their performance of "Thank You Soldiers". Tenaha Band
Director, Mr. Rhett Pilcher, concluded the program with a beautiful
rendition of "God Bless America."

Tenaha Elementary students from Mrs. Janice Williams' 4th grade science
classroom had fun creating static electricity! 

Tenaha Elementary 1st grade students participated in the "Fantastic Teeth"
program that is sponsored by the Tenaha Masonic Lodge.

 

Members of the organization brought dental care kits and distributed them to
each student in 1st grade and discussed with them the importance of dental
hygiene.

The free workshop is co-hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Nacogdoches County and the Attoyac Bayou Watershed Partnership.

The morning session will be at the Courthouse Annex, 203 W. Main St. The afternoon session will include a walk and presentations along the bayou.

Dictson, Texas Water Resources Institute Extension program specialist and coordinator of the program in College Station, said the workshop will focus on the nature and function of stream and riparian zones, as well as the benefits and economic impacts from proper functioning riparian systems.

A riparian zone is the land area adjacent to the bank of a stream, creek, bayou or river.

Dictson said workshop topics will include riparian and watershed management principles, water quality, riparian vegetation, hindrances to healthy riparian areas, stream processes, management practices and discussion of local resources.

Workshop presentations will be given by representatives of the Texas Water Resources Institute, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, AgriLife Extension, and Texas A&M Forest Service. 

Lucas Gregory, a project manager for the water institute in College Station, said the goal of the watershed partnership is to promote the long-term conservation and stewardship of the Attoyac Bayou watershed that

improves and sustains water quality, protects the natural resources it contains and maintains its economic viability. 

Gregory said the Attoyac Bayou Watershed Partnership developed a watershed protection plan in 2014 to help mitigate the water quality concerns.

Ricky Thompson, AgriLife Extension agent for Nacogdoches County, said participants will receive a certificate of completion and appropriate continuing education unit certificates at the conclusion of the training.

The workshop offers over five types of continuing education units including three units – two general and one integrated pest management – for Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license holders. It offers one unit from the Texas Water Resources Institute and six hours for Texas Nutrient Management Planning specialists. Foresters and professional loggers can receive 6 hours Texas Forestry Association and 5.5 hours from Society of American Foresters. The program may also be used for continuing education units for professional engineers and architects.

The riparian education program is managed by the Texas Water Resources Institute, part of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, AgriLife Extension and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University. It is funded through a Clean Water Act grant provided by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Due to an investigation into illegal gambling, Detective Stephen Stroud with the Center Police Department executed a Search and Seizure Warrant on the Loop 500 Convenience store on 11/13/2015. Approximately $170,000.00 in cash and gambling machines were seized from the alleged illegal activities. Virendra Patel, Dipa Patel, and Angel Gonzalez were arrested for Engaging in Criminal Activity, Keeping a Gambling Place, Promotion of Gambling and Possession of Gambling Devises. All subjects later bonded out and were released.

The Panola College men's basketball team defeats 5th ranked South Plains

Levelland, Texas - The Panola College men's basketball team defeated South

Plains College, 78-69. With the win, the Ponies improve their record to

6-2. "This was a huge win for our program." stated Head Coach Grant

McMillan. "Not many teams go in and win at South Plains.They have a Hall of

Fame Coach sitting over there, this game will help us come January and

February. Our guys competed at a high level and kept on answering the bell

time and time again." He added.

Offensively, Panola was led by Charles Tucker (*Lansing, Michigan*) netting

22 points and was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. He also

dished out nine assists. Devyn Wilson (*Brooklyn, New York*) and Tope

Arikawe (*Nigeria*) also scored in double-figures with 15 and 12,

respectively. Terry Holt (*Nashville, Tennessee*) came off the bench and

went a perfect 4 for 4 from the three point line to help the Ponies

offense. Arikawe led the team in rebounds chasing down 11. As a team,

Panola shot 50 precent from the field and 64 percent from the three point

line. Panola out rebounded South Plains, 43-33.

Panola will next be in action this upcoming Saturday, November 21st as they

take on Coastal Bend. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM at the Arthur Johnson

Gymnasium.

Roderic Johnson, Associate Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, in Houston. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited.

Center High School will host a pep rally open to the community Thursday night November 19th at Roughrider Stadium starting at 6 pm.  Come out and help the Band, Chaparrals, and Cheer Squad as they cheer on the Roughriders against the Fairfield Eagles in Round two of the playoffs.   Remaining Roughrider playoff shirts will be available for purchase.

On 11/11/15 at about 6:30 PM, an auto pedestrian crash occurred on SH 7, approximately 4.9 miles East of Center in Shelby County. Shelby County DPS Troopers responded to and investigated the crash. The preliminary crash investigation indicates that two individuals had exited a vehicle when it stopped to assist another motorist and were in the roadway when they were struck by a 2010 Ford Fusion driven by Mitzi Rhey Baker-Kennedy (47), from Joaquin, TX. The pedestrians were identified as Kadeshia Simone Barfield (19), from Mansfield, LA and Demanio Lavandrick Howard (24), also from Mansfield, LA. Barfield was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash at 7:05 PM, by Shelby County Justice of the Peace Maxi Eaves. Howard was transported to a Center  hospital for treatment and later released. Baker-Kennedy was not reported as being injured during the crash. This crash remains under investigation and no additional information is available at this time.

Valerie Heyen, 60, of Center, previously of Mansfield, LA and Carson City, Nevada, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at her residence after a sudden illness.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Cool Springs Cemetery in Logansport, LA with Bro. Richard Goodwin officiating.

She was born August 21, 1955 in Shreveport, LA to Duane and Nelda (Stone) Heyen. She worked for Goodwin Roofing in Center.

The Joaquin JCC will be hosting Dollars for David on November 18.  David is the 2 year old son of Tyson and Christi Penning. Due to issues at birth, David has developmental delays, visual impairment, and cerebral palsy.  David has been such a blessing to the Penning family, just as they have been a blessing to him.  He receives lots of different therapies, and JCC is conducting a fundraiser to help purchase a piece of equipment for visual therapy.  Students will be allowed to wear school appropriate pajamas for a donation of $5 or more and wear a hat for a donation of $1 or more.  We will be accepting donations from anyone who would like to participate.  You may send your donation with your JJH or JHS student on November 18, or you may drop it by the office.  We are looking forward to being able to bless David with the funds for new equipment!

The annual County Attorney Toy Drive has begun according to County Attorney Gary Rholes.  The Toy Drive needs donations of new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls (ages 3 through 13 or money donations.  We would like to receive the donations by December 3^rd. Rholes explained that his staff works with Shelby County Schools to obtain names of deserving children. The toys will then be distributed by his office on December 12^th.  “The need is great this year, so we really need help from our generous Shelby County Citizens” Rholes stated.  Anyone needing further information can call the County Attorney’s Office at (936-598-6100).

Timpson ISD had their annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 11th. The American Legion Post 90 and Timpson ISD did a spectacular job for our veterans. The following are pictures of the event.

The Children's Advocacy Center is conducting their annual Toy Drive now through December 11, 2015. They are asking for contributions of toys and clothing to be distributed to the children that they have served in the past year. Typically these children range in age from 3 to 17. Donations can be delivered to the Advocacy Center at 220 Field Street in Center. They ask that clothing be new and unused. You may also donate money and they will purchase toys and clothes that are needed.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the whereabouts of 17 year-old Keifer Joel Nelson of Joaquin. Nelson was last seen November 2 at approximately 3 a.m.

Nelson is a white male a white male, approximately 5'7 tall and weighs 162 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and a small cross tattoo between the thumb and index finger.

The jury that has been summoned for Monday, November 16, 2015 for the 273^rd District Court Honorable Charles C. “Brick” Dickerson presiding has been cancelled due to the scheduled cases being resolved or passed. Anyone receiving a summons for that day is released from jury service until they receive a future summons.

Shelbyville Student Council and the Shelbyville JCC’s are collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Shelby County Outreach to help fight hunger in our community. Drop off items at any Shelbyville Campus between now and November 17^th. All donations will be greatly appreciated!

Texas Quick Care, formerly East Texas Extended Care, will be hosting a flu shot clinic in the First Baptist parking lot in Center on Friday, November 13^th from 1-5pm. Be sure to bring your insurance card, otherwise shots will be $20 cash.

Santa Claus recently delivered an invitation to Alease Copelin, the recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award, to serve as Grand Marshal of the 16^th annual Santa’s Christmas Parade presented by Shelby Savings Bank, which will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 beginning at 6:00 p.m. 

Mrs. Copelin was recognized at the annual Chamber of Commerce awards banquet for her contributions to many activities and organizations in Shelby County.  Her leadership was noted in helping, creating and sustaining various programs including the Backpack Program that aids in fighting weekend hunger for school students, the community Flag Program, Project Graduation and Career Camp with many volunteers.

According to Randy Collard, Parade Chairman, vendor space is available free to churches, civic and non-profit organizations.  Interested organizations must complete a vendor application and will be notified regarding acceptance.  Approved vendors can set up from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the day of the parade in an assigned location on the Historic Courthouse lawn.  During the parade afternoon the Daughters of the Republic William Carroll Crawford Chapter will host tours of the First Ladies in Texas Building.

Categories for the 2015 “Christmas Movies and Songs” themed parade will include Individuals, Schools, Businesses, Churches and Civic Organizations.  Parade participants this year will be allowed to include their horses with special applicable rules and considerations. Judges will award cash prizes to the top three places in each category, First $100, Second $50 and Third $25 and the Overall Best in Show Float will receive $250 cash prize.

Parade float entry registration is free and completed applications must be returned to the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce office by the entry deadline on Monday, November 23, 2015.  Applications for the parade, vendor space and entry rules are now available at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce office located at 100 Courthouse Square, A-101 on the historic downtown Center square or online at  www.shelbycountychamber.com.

*Panola goes 1-1 at Trinity Valley Classic*

The Panola College Men's basketball team split their games this weekend at

the Trinity Valley Classic. On Friday night the Ponies defeated

Southwestern Christian Community College 95-73. In the second game, Panola

was upended by Dodge City Community College 72-54. "Earning a split during

a classic is always a positive." said head coach Grant McMillan. "If we

continue to grow from our mistakes we have a chance to put together

something special." he added. After this weekend’s games the Ponies bring

their record to 4-2.

*Game 1 - Verse Southwestern Christian CC*

Panola jumped out quick and took a 14-5 lead to start the game. They pushed

the lead to 24 points in the first half before going to the locker room

with a lead, 53-33. Southwestern closed the gap to 14 points with just

under 8:00 minutes to go but never got any closer.

Five separate players scored in double figures. Leading the way was Chan

Williams-Bey *(Hartford, Connecticut*) with 17. Other in double figures

include Charles Tucker *(Lansing, Michigan*) scored 16, Terry Holt *(Nashville,

Tennessee) *with 13, and Jonathon Wiley *(Houston, Texas)* with 11. Devyn

Wilson *(Brooklyn, New York)* had his best scoring of the game of the young

season, netting 13 points off the bench. Williams-Bey recorded a

double-double adding 10 rebounds and Tucker led the team in assists with

seven. All 11 Ponies who suited up scored. As a team, Panola shot 56

percent from the field and forced Southwestern into 17 turnovers.

*Game 2 – Verse Dodge City CC*

In a game where offense was lacking, Panola found themselves down 39-33 at

halftime. Panola scored the first two points of the second half but could

never gather enough momentum to inch any closer. Panola shot an ice cold 26

percent from the field and 17 percent from the three point line for the

game.

Tucker had a team high 17 points in the defeat on 6 of 7 shooting. Holt and

Williams-Bey also scored in double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.

Wiley recorded a team high 10 rebounds. Panola's bench only scored four

points in the loss. As a team the Ponies gave up 19 offensive rebounds.

After playing six D1 junior colleges in nine days, Panola gets to open up

the newly renovated Arthur Johnson Gym this upcoming Friday, November 13th.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm on the campus of Panola College.

Melba Beckham, 77, of Joaquin, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015 in Center.

The Panola College men's basketball team defeated

Weatherford College here Wednesday night by a score of 81-78. With the win,

the Ponies improve their record to 3-1 on the year. "We played in an

extremely hostile environment." explained Head Coach Grant McMillan. "Going

on the road in Region V is never easy. Our guys competed at a high level

and executed the game plan." He added.

After a seesaw first half, Panola took a 4 point lead into the locker

rooms, 46-42. A flurry of buckets to start the second half gave Panola

their biggest lead, 53-44 with 17:55 remaining in the game. Weatherford

crawled their way back to tie the game at 68-68 with 8:32 left. A Terry

Holt *(Nashville, Tennessee*) layup sparked a quick 8-2 run where the

Ponies never surrendered the lead. Weatherford did close the gap within 2

points, 77-75 with 38 seconds remaining but Charles Tucker *(Lansing,

Michigan)* sank two free throws to ice the game.

Leading Panola in scoring for the second straight game was Jonathan

Wiley *(Houston,

Texas)* with 19 points. Also scoring in double figures was Holt with 17,

Tucker with 15, and Chan Williams-Bey *(Hartford, Connecticut)* with 12.

Tope Arikawe *(Nigeria) *led the Ponies in rebounds chasing down eight,

while Tucker also led the team in assists with seven. As a team, Panola

knocked down 27 of 35 free throws and shot 46 percent from the field.

Panola will be back in action this upcoming Friday as they head to Athens,

Texas to play in the Trinity Valley Community College Classic. The Ponies

take on Southwest Christian Community College at 5:30 PM on the campus of

Trinity valley.

Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will conduct their annual Buddy Poppy day on Saturday, November 7th, 2015 in front of Walmart in Center from 9 am to 3 pm.  All donations received will stay right here in Shelby County to help continue the community service work of the Post and Auxiliary.  This community service includes but not limited to helping local veterans in need, providing local families Final Military Funeral Honors for their loved ones, conducting programs and observances on 21 days of the year, and Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen scholarship programs for local Junior High and High School students.

  Panola College rodeo team traveled to Lake Charles, on the 30-31 for the fourth Southern Region rodeo. The rodeo was held indoors, and the weather was not a factor at all. Panola had some individuals that where very strong in their events.

  Bailey Plaisier, a freshman, made a great ride on his third horse with a 74 to win fourth in the Bareback riding. The first two horses that Bailey got on did not buck well enough in the judges eyes, and he received multiple re-rides. Bareback riding is very physically demanding, and Bailey showed how strong he is both mentally and physically by competing on three horses back to back. He is in his first year of college and is proving to be a great team leader, and a huge contender for the title in the Southern Region

  Cody Wright had an outstanding rodeo placing in two events. Cody, a four event cowboy, showed how valuable it can be to enter more than one event. Wright was the fast time in the calf roping for the first two performances with a 9.1 second run. His time held until the second run on the cattle where he was pushed back to fourth place. Cody also entered in the Saddle Bronc riding, for his first time and placed sixth in that event. Cody has only been on three other practice horses here at Panola before he entered the event. Wright’s efforts in both events earned him a second place finish in men’s all around.  Cody is a very talented cowboy and is expected to be among the leaders when the CNFR rolls around in July.

  The rodeo team will travel to Conroe for the fifth and final rodeo of the fall season November 13-14. Both the men and women’s team are strong and have a great chance at a CNFR qualification.Pam

Joaquin ISD will be holding a Veterans Day Program honoring our veterans on Wednesday, November 11th, 8:30 AM in the High School Gymnasium. The event is open to the public and all veterans and current service members are encouraged to attend. Born June 7, 1928, in Pasadena, TX, Margie Sue (Ramsey) Childs was the daughter of the late Sidney Marvin Ramsey and Florence Valeta Hearn Ramsey.  Margie graduated from Timpson High School in 1945 and became an Air Force wife when she married G. Terrell Childs on June 28, 1946.  She was a devoted military wife.  About 63 years ago, she left Timpson by train with two small children in tow.  We left New York by ocean liner to meet Dad who was stationed at Skulthorpe Air Force Base in England.  Together we moved to Lockbourne, Ohio and moved back to Timpson when Dad retired.

Mom taught Sunday School and enjoyed singing in the church choir.  She loved to bake pies and make quilts and give them away.  She would take produce from her garden and give to her sisters who weren’t able to garden.  Mom loved the Lord and set a good example for her husband, three children, family, and friends.

Margie is survived by husband Terrell Childs; sons, Philip Childs and wife Kathy and Jim Childs and wife Lisa; daughter Sue Childs Pinkston; sisters Avis Stamps and Alma Bridwell; niece Betty Parker; 4 grandchildren: Rob and wife Denise, Stephanie and husband Tim, Elaine and husband Kristian, and Brock; and 3 great grandchildren: Jessica, Nathan, and Ashley.

In addition to her parents, Margie Sue Childs was preceded in death by brothers Roy and James Ramsey and sisters Grace Pledger, Troy Webb, Mary Lavennie Galbreath, and Emma Milford.

Operation Gratitude is collecting items to help supports the troops this holiday season. Items to include: Non- perishable food, Sunscreen, Halloween Candy, deodorant, coffee, off insect repellent. These care packages will be sent directly to the troops. Operation Gratitude is asking for volunteers to send Letters along with their care package. Drop off will be located at Dr. Coffin’s office through November 12th. Dr. Coffin’s office is located at 514 Tenaha St.  You may drop off any items you have Mon-Thur. 8-5. On (Saturday) 10/31/15 at 12:12 AM (midnight), Nacogdoches County DPS responded to a crash on HWY 59 south, approximately four miles South of Nacogdoches. The preliminary crash investigation indicates a Honda Accord was traveling northbound on HWY 59 when it struck a Chevrolet pickup from behind as it was slowing to make a right turn. The Chevrolet truck then traveled into and came to rest in the northbound ditch of HWY 59. As a result of the initial crash the Honda spun around facing south in the northbound lanes of HWY 59, where moments later it was struck from the front by a northbound Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Sydney Cantalupo (20), from Driftwood, TX. The driver of the Chevrolet pickup was identified as Candice Cooper (32), from Nacogdoches, TX. The driver of the Honda Accord was identified as Jose Luis Reyes (21), from Nacogdoches, TX. Reyes was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The condition of  Cooper and Cantalupo is not known at this time.
