He was born August 22, 1951 in Jacksonville, TX to J.C. (Joe) and Vay Dell Ellis Cook of Center, TX.

As a young boy he fell in love with horses. As he got older he got involved in rodeo where he did a little bit of it all. He roped, team roped, steer wrestled and even rode a few bulls. His love of horses turned into a passion that lasted until his last breath. After he retired from the Texas Highway Department he spent all of his time breeding and racing horses. He named some after his nieces and nephews and one Ms. Vay Dell who was named for his mother who he cherished. His other passion was his trips to Yellowstone. He would spend hours scouring the mountain sides and valleys for bears.

L.B. Evans, 78, of Joaquin, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021, in Joaquin.

Born May 25, 1943, in San Augustine, L.B. is the son of Ben Evans and Alice Richardson Evans. He worked as a carpenter.  L.B.’s favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, MaryLee Evans of Joaquin; children, Jessie Griffith and wife Lisa of Joaquin, Gary Evans and wife Melissa of Joaquin, Ricky Evans and wife Deanne of Joaquin, Christy Bates of Joaquin, and Lori Eldridge of Joaquin; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

Billy McSwain, 81, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, September 27, 2021, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with visitation one hour prior at Watson & Sons Funeral Home.  Bro. Charles Hall will officiate.  

Born July 9, 1940, in Center, Billy is the son of J.W. “Bill” McSwain and Iris Lowery McSwain.  At 16 years of age, he joined the United States Navy. Billy later met his wife Helen, and together they raised two sons – John Paul and Tim McSwain.  While his boys were young, Billy enjoyed spending time with them during athletic events and outdoor activities, especially duck hunting. Billy and Helen also enjoyed family RV trips.  Big Country and Western music fans, a Gene Watson song could bring a smile to their faces, proving true the song, “Old Love Never Dies.” A hard worker, Billy often could be found operating heavy equipment and doing mechanical work.  Billy was an employee for Pennzoil refinery in Shreveport, La for 41 years.  In his later years, he found a loving companion in his dog, Houdini.  Until his health began to decline, Billy was a very active member of Jackson Baptist Church in Joaquin.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Tyler McSwain of Joaquin; son, Tim McSwain and wife Paula of Mont Belvieu; grandchildren, Daniel McSwain of Anahuac, Tyler McSwain and wife Peyton of Joaquin, Logan McSwain and fiance Kara of Anahuac, and Bailee Smith and husband Cole of Joaquin; great grandchildren, Landry, John Tyler, and Paxton McSwain, and Mikelyn Smith; and daughter-in-law, Joel McSwain Bumback of Joaquin.

Preceded in death by son, John Paul McSwain; parents, J.W. “Bill” McSwain and Iris Lowery McSwain; and siblings, Kenneth McSwain and Jackie Adams.

Our loving mother, sister, and friend Louise Cockrell passed away on September 2nd in Seattle, Washington.  She was born on October 22nd, 1930 to George and Lottie (Walsh) Walker in Monroe, Louisiana.  Louise graduated from Many High School in 1948 and then attended Panola College in Carthage, Texas taking courses in business.  After moving to Joaquin, Louise worked at the only café in downtown Joaquin where she met John Floyd Cockrell whom she eventually married on December 15, 1952.

A while after marrying John, Louise joined him in Manhattan Beach, CA where he was stationed in the Army.  Louise returned to Joaquin to give birth to her son Ronald at Barksdale A.F.B. in October 1955.  The family continued living in Joaquin after John was discharged from the service where Louise worked as a teller at the Texas State Bank in Joaquin.

In August of 1961, Louise and John decided to pack up their family and move to Tacoma, Washington in search of more opportunities for the future.  John’s oldest sister and family were already living there, and John knew the area as he was stationed nearby during the Korean War.  Louise and John remained happily married in Tacoma until John’s passing in the spring of 1983.  After Ronald went to college, Louise returned to work as a store teller for the Fred Meyer grocery chain eventually retiring in 1992.

After retirement, Louise continued to enjoy her favorite pastimes of shopping, sewing, crochet, knitting, reading, and gardening.  She lived independently in the family home until her health would no longer allow in early 2016.

Louise will be laid to rest in Sholar Cemetery next to her husband John.  Friends and family are invited to visit Louise at the Mangum Funeral Home in Center, Texas on Saturday, October 2nd between 5 & 7 pm.  A private service will be held graveside at her interment.

Louise is survived by her sister Delores Gallien of Shreveport, her son Ronald Cockrell and his husband Michael Messick of Tacoma, WA as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins on both her and John’s sides of the family.

Donny Cleron Daw, age 72, passed away peacefully, with his loving wife Tamra by his side, in Carthage, Texas on the morning of September 25, 2021. Donny was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and after three months he lost his battle with the disease. Donny accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a young teenager and his family has peace in the assurance of his salvation.

Donny was the son of Foster Cleron Daw and Mauverine (Mickey) Strickland, both of Shelbyville. Donny was born on September 16, 1949, in Center, Texas and was raised in Shelbyville where he also raised his three children. He was a graduate of Shelbyville High School and an accomplished Dragon athlete.  He was a life-long Shelbyville Dragon fan and never missed a game when his sons were playing or his daughter was cheering. He coached youth baseball and enjoyed making a difference in the lives of the young children he coached.

Donny, lovingly known as DD by his grandchildren, “adopted” grandchildren, neighbors, and friends, was happiest spending time outdoors. He took his grandsons fishing, bought them their first pocketknives, and regularly hosted an annual Halloween “Boo Bash” party just for their entertainment. Per his wife Tamra, he took great pride in being a mentor to his stepson, Trey, and grandchildren, encouraging in them a strong work ethic and the need to pursue the highest academic endeavor and to reach for their dreams.

Donny was a successful semi-retired businessman whose outgoing, never-met-a-stranger personality allowed him to build many business and personal relationships. Donny’s “word was his bond” and this philosophy served him greatly in all his endeavors.  Donny greatly enjoyed entertaining clients, friends, and family. One of his greatest joys was spending time at his beloved camp, The Outback, on Toledo Bend Lake. There you could find him fishing, cooking, and entertaining the guys on and off the water. Donny was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan and a proud son of Texas.

When he married his second wife, Tamra, a new dimension was added to his life as he gained new family members who embraced him and made him feel a part of their Louisiana culture and Syrian-Lebanese family. He cheered on those LSU Tigers and occasionally the Saints! He took pride in maintaining the beauty of his home, the Daw Ranch, in Bethany, Louisiana. You could often find him tinkering in his shop, working on his boats, and listening to his favorite music.

Donny was preceded in death by his father, Foster Cleron Daw; mother, Mauverine (Mickey) Strickland; and brother, Billy Joe Hutto.

He is survived by his wife, Tamra LaHood Daw; children, Jim Daw (Judy) of Patroon, Joe Daw (J.J.) of Montgomery and Jennifer Pultorak (Jim) of Rockwall; step-children, Trey Allen (Becky) of Bossier City, Louisiana and Tara Schildroth (Layne) of Springhill, Louisiana; grandchildren, Sydney Daw, Luke and Monte Scamperino, Zachary and Madison Schildroth and Sean Allen; sister, Nancy Perry (Jim) of Center; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

David Weaver Jr., 41, of Joaquin, passed away Friday, September 24, 2021, in Joaquin.

Kyle Glenn Bush, 51, of Timpson passed away early Monday morning, September 20, in Tyler after a long, hard fight with Covid. During his 7 weeks in the hospital, he made a huge impression on those who cared for him. His doctor described him as being a “mule of a man” with a “heart of a lion” when speaking of his strength, determination and his will to fight.

Kyle was born in Center on January 7, 1970 to Elton “Bubba” and Nancy McIver Bush. He was joined in 1975 by his brother, Kevin Dayton. As a young man, Kyle met the love of his life, Carla Ramsey, and they married in 1992. In 1994, their firstborn child, Kylie Renee, was born and died a few days later. After enduring such a devastating loss, their lives were forever changed on May 27, 1997, when they welcomed their greatest blessings, twins, Kaylie Renee and Keaton Kyle. For the rest of his days, Kyle’s world revolved around anything and everything that involved his kids. Barrel racing, softball, baseball, showing cattle, hunting, fishing and anything else they found to do along the way, Kyle was all in and spent every spare moment being Keaton and Kaylie’s biggest supporters alongside Carla. He was so proud of the brand Keaton has built, B Square, that began with he and Kaylie showing cattle as children. His kids were his greatest accomplishments and most cherished blessings.

Kyle worked mostly in construction but he wore many hats along the way and made many investments that allowed him to give his family the best possible life. He loved to be anywhere his family was but his favorite places were in the woods and on the riverbank. He was a true outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He spent many days with his friends and he had so many. People were just drawn to Kyle for his big personality. He was known far and wide for his ability to entertain and cook for a crowd. He could make a competition out of anything and was the best 42 player. He left this world as a champion as he and Kaylie claimed first place in the 2021 Grill Fest 42 Tournament this past April. He was larger than life and to know him was to love him.

Bruce Howard Denby born Aug 21 1951, left his earthly home Friday, September 17, 2021, in Gary Texas surrounded by his loving wife and family.  After becoming ill in January Bruce was no longer able to fight the mystery illness that was plaguing his body.  

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 20, 2021, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Brother Lamar Denby and Brother Rob Merriman officiating.  Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with final prayer by Queenie Brinson.

Bruce, the youngest of five children grew up in Denby Town Texas.  He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1969 where he was involved in many clubs and sports but loved football the most.

At a very young age Bruce learned to use his hands and skills in carpentry and anything mechanical.   If he attempted to build it or fix it it was done with precision and beauty!    His love for all things Ford was never called into question.   Older trucks and mustangs were his passion projects. When he was not using his skills building something you would find him tinkering on an old vehicle or 10 in his shop.  If you knew Bruce for 5 minutes you would surely hear all about the15 vintage vehicles he had and his vision for every one of them. 

Although a back condition kept Bruce from serving his country in the military he was so proud to spend 2 years in Iraq helping to rebuild that country.  He loved working where he felt like he was making a difference in the lives of those around him at home or on foreign soil.   Bruce `made so many faithful friends during his time overseas that have remained close right up to the end.  Bruce worked as a saltwater pumper for Nuverra Environmental Solutions the past 10 years.  He loved to work and was only recently sidelined from doing what he loved due to his illness.

Bruce loved Jesus, his family and friends and his Country. 

One of the greatest singer/songwriters that never made it, Bruce Denby!  When he decided to enjoy a little down time you could find him in his man cave lightly strumming his guitar to some Gary Stewart, #3 on his jukebox, or any old school country music song.  Karaoke was for sure his favorite way to wind down from a week of hard work.   If you were looking for some belly laughs and a great night he was your guy!

Bruce loved to garden and no matter what he planted or where he planted it, IT GREW!  It was said by Carolyn, his wife of 19 years, “I do believe Bruce Denby could plant a tire and grow a car”!   His friends and neighbors would agree!

The heart that beat inside Bruce’s chest was as big as the State of Texas.   He was quick to smile, generous with all he had, never judging and always ready to give a little grace. Bruce may have been smaller in stature but he was a Giant in kindness.  

Left to cherish his memory is wife and best friend Carolyn.

Ernest Terrand Watts, 65, died on September 9, 2021. Ernest was born on August 30, 1956, to Cartelyou Brinson and Pearlie Mae Watts in Center, Texas.

Ernest grew up in Center, Texas, and graduated from Center High School, he played football, basketball and ran track. Ernest found the love of his life Shirley and married on July 4, 1975, and had 46 wonderful years together. He was a successful small business owner of Watts Transportation. He enjoyed church and was the treasurer, custodian, usher, and deacon. Ernest loved going to sporting event and spending time with family and friends. He was loving and caring and helped anyone that needed it. He was loving husband, father and PaPa and worked hard to provide and take care of his family. He could always make you laugh no matter what the situation was.

She went on to complete 9 years of higher education at University of Houston.  From September 10, 1950 until her retirement on July 1, 1984, Katy was a secretary for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.  In her free time, she enjoyed reading, yardwork, and tending to her inside plants.  Katy was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her brother, Guy Flournoy and wife Joyce of Shreveport, Louisiana; sisters, Sarah V. Lewis and husband John of Huntington and Rachel Brannon and husband Ronnie of Hallsville; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Flournoy of Longview and Carolyn Flournoy of Tenaha; brother-in-law, George Duke of Timpson; also, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Angela Jackson, age 51, of Milam, Texas, passed from this life on September 6, 2021, in Milam, Texas.  She was born to Juanita (Ramey) Watson and Calvin Watson on November 15, 1969, in San Augustine, Texas.  

Angela loved her family, she was a homemaker, and was a wonderful mother, sister, and a beloved grandmother, and a good friend to all who knew her.

Mr. Jerry Lynn Birdwell, age 78, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in Lufkin, Texas.

Mr. Birdwell was born September 15, 1942, in San Augustine County, Texas, to parents Murray and Agnes (Sowell) Birdwell. He was a longtime area resident. Jerry had worked at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Houston before his disability retirement.

His survivors include his daughter, Jerry Jane Barnett and her husband Charlie of Lufkin, Texas; a sister, Jo Ann Snell and husband Dewayne of Broaddus, Texas; a brother, Wilburn Birdwell and wife Vicky of Hamptonville, North Carolina; a grandson, Jonathan Orso of Lufkin, Texas; step-granddaughter, Victoria Barnett of Cleveland, Texas; close friends, Paula and Ralph Lackey of San Augustine, Texas; great-nieces and nephews who were very close to him, including, J.D. Chandler, Brandy Moore, Courtney Willis, Zachary Harvey, Pete Harvey, Blake Harvey, Leah Harvey, Brenna Harvey, and Colton Harvey; and a host of other relatives.

Jeanette (Baldree) Davidson, age 83, a longtime resident and retired nursing home owner and administrator, of San Augustine, passed away late Friday evening, September 3, 2021, in San Augustine. 

Jeannette was born October 17, 1937, to parents Lou T. (Kerr) Baldree and James Loma Baldree in the Rosevine Community of Sabine County, Texas.  Jeanette married the love of her life, the late Gary Davidson, and had celebrated 49 years until his death on July 17, 2005.  As an active nursing home administrator, Jeanette was involved in the daily routines and overseeing the care of her residents.  She was active in the San Augustine Chamber of Commerce, the Red Hat Ladies, served on the Shelby Savings Bank board of directors, and the San Augustine Memorial Hospital board of directors, and was an active member of First Baptist Church in San Augustine for many years. 

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Noble and her husband Steve of San Augustine; son, David Davidson and his wife Teresa of San Augustine; her grandchildren, Zach Noble and his wife Tiffani,  Kade Noble and his wife Kelli, Jacob Noble, Erin Scarber and her husband Brett, and Cameron Noble; her great-grandchildren, Ace Noble, Kala, Grace and Faith Kirkley, Kace and James Noble, Ian and Archer Chase; Aubree, Evan and Eli Scarber. Very special family friends, Becky Haley and Becky Michalec. Along with numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and her beloved Twin Lakes Care Center family. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Lee Davidson; parents, James Loma and Lou T. Baldree; and sisters, Wilma Henson and her husband Jack, and Lucene Westmoreland and her husband Jimmy.

Sharon Annette Dwire, age 53, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2021, in San Augustine, Texas.

She was born February 16, 1968, in San Augustine County, Texas, to parents Betty Jo (Parker) and B.C. Dwire. Sharon was a lifelong area resident and worked several years in nursing home dietary, currently employed at the Summit Care Center.

Her survivors include her daughter, Christa Mendez of San Augustine, Texas; a granddaughter, Hannah Mendez of San Augustine, Texas; sisters, Pamela Denby and husband Jimmy of San Augustine, Texas, Rhonda Hightower of San Augustine, Texas, Tammy Dwire Amburn and husband Charles Wayne of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Angie Henley of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Steve Dwire and wife Lynette of San Augustine, Texas, along with 10 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her father, B.C. Dwire; her mother, Betty Jo Henley; a son, Christopher David Dwire; and a brother, John Curtis Henley.

 Margie was known as a “second mom” to many throughout the community. Her home-cooked meals, no-nonsense advice, gifts of charity and unconditional love for everyone she met will be forever cherished.

Clifton Marquette Cagle (Poss)

October 7, 1956 – September 1, 2021

Clifton Marquette Cagle, 64, joined his father and mother in heaven on September 1, 2021. Clifton was born on Oct 7, 1956, to Clifton Edward Cagle and Zera Christen Armstrong in Center, Texas. 

Clifton graduated from Shelbyville High School and was honorably discharged from the air force. He was a fire fighter and treasurer for Shelbyville volunteer fire department. He was also a Dispatcher for 20 plus years and a member of Mt Calvary Full Gospel Church. Mark was a gentle and kind soul. He never met a stranger; he was full of love and life. He loved his family and his friends more then anything else. The world will not be the same without him. Mark is loved by so many and will always continue to be loved and missed.

Brealon Allen “Buddy” Sanford, Jr. (68) passed away on September 2nd, 2021 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Services will be held at New Life Church in Center, TX., under the direction of Senior Pastor Steve Noble. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm on Friday September 10th, with funeral service immediately following. Burial will be at Borders Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Mangum Funeral Home. 

Brealon Allen “Buddy” Sanford, Jr. was born in Houston, Texas on June 19th, 1953 to Brealon and Betty (Moore) Sanford. Buddy spent more than 40 years in the oil business in one fashion or another. While he loved the oil business, he loved to tell people that he used to work in Major League Baseball. He would then explain that his “Major League” career was from a brief stint with the Houston Astros front office, “and by that, I sold peanuts, popcorn and cokes.” Buddy also spent some time trying his hand as a professional bowler. After numerous perfect games, many “750’s” and at least two “800’s” to his name, he said, “That’s about the best I can be, there’s no sense in watching my career go down from here!” Buddy was also an avid hunter, whose life revolved around deer season. 

However, even with so many fun hobbies, Buddy’s favorite thing was being “GrandBuddy / Gubby” to his grandbabies. Always the jokester, he was a kid at heart and loved to spend time making his grandkids laugh. 

Buddy had committed himself to Christ early in life. However, he would quickly tell you, it wasn’t until he was in his 50’s that he learned what it was like to have a real relationship with Jesus. His spiritual life took a positive turn from that point forward. He talked often of what he was learning from the Bible, as well as how he felt the Lord was guiding his life.

Mrs Maude Yvonne Rowe was born October 17, 1932 in Zavalla,Texas. She passed this life September 3, 2021 in Carthage, Texas. She was one of five children born to the marriage of Drew Pierce and Callie Porter Conner. She was raised and schooled in Tenaha graduating with the Tiger class of 1951. Maude married her high school sweetheart Willis Rowe in 1952 and they enjoyed 55 years before he preceded her in death in 2008.

Maudie graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in Home Economics and Elementary Education. She loved sewing and teaching home economics at Nederland High School, then moved to teaching Elementary School, where she had a real passion for her 5th grade students for over 20 years. Her final years as an educator were spent in East Texas at Tenaha Elementary.

Maudie enjoyed reading her Bible and spending time with God, and taught Sunday School and Children's Choir. She loved watching girls of all ages dance, and live performing arts of all kinds. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, as well as "Mimie" to all who knew her. Maude Yvonne was also preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Nell Mathews, as well as a brother, Kenneth Conner. Doyle Carter, 81, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, in Nacogdoches.

Born December 8, 1939, in Shelby County, Doyle is the son of Jim Arthur Carter and Audrey Johnson Carter. He taught as an Ag teacher at just about every school in Shelby County, and retired after teaching over 45 years in total from Center ISD. During his spare time, he enjoyed farming.

Evelyn Faye Thompson, 90, of Joaquin, TX entered into rest Monday, August 30, 2021.  

Faye was born February 10, 1931, in Palestine, Texas to Evelyn Opal Weatherford and Hugh Lawson Solomon. She showed her love through cooking which began at the early age of nine years old when she would pull a chair up to the stove and cook for her three brothers. Her specialties were biscuits, dressing, chicken and dumplings and her infamous berry cobbler. She was known as the “pie lady” at church. Faye also had a love for sewing and participated in the ladies’ sewing ministry at First Baptist Church Tenaha for many years.  She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 3rd, 2021, at Mangum Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 4th, 2021, Mangum Funeral Home with Robbie Johnson officiating.
