Cathye Baldwin

Cathye Baldwin passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, two days shy of her 76th birthday. She died peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her. She was born in Decatur, Georgia on November 17, 1947, the daughter of Winfred Cannon and Hazel Alred Cannon. In her youth, Cathye was fiery and energetic. She was a loyal friend, standing her ground from an early age and fiercely protective of her siblings.

Cathye dated Wayne Carmichael while at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. She liked to reminisce that he was a great dancer and people would cheer them on as they danced. They got married in 1967 and had three sons. Wayne’s career assignments took them through six states before they settled down in Tyler, Texas in 1980, where they remained until the boys graduated from high school. She was an involved and supportive mom, often spending weekends driving all over Texas for her sons’ swim meets. In 1993, Cathye graduated as class valedictorian with a Bachelor of Social Work from Stephen F. Austin University. She went on to work for Hospice of Deep East Texas and spent over a decade providing physical and emotional support to patients with terminal conditions and their families.

Cathye later married Joe Baldwin, and they moved to Huxley, Texas, on Toledo Bend Lake. She quickly forged close friendships in the neighborhood. Her grandchildren, whom she thought walked on water, loved to visit. They spent days fishing off the dock, chasing lizards, and eating her delicious Southern home cooking. In 2005, she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. She was warned by the doctor that she might never walk again. In her typical determined way, she refused to accept this reality and fought to regain enough mobility to remain fully independent throughout her life. This included questionable decisions like climbing up a ladder alone to sweep her roof and realizing afterward she couldn’t get down. She disliked a fuss being made over her, though she could be convinced to lean on her family when needed. She was also supported by an incredibly dear group of local friends.

Cathye was creative and skilled with her hands, creating stained glass, crocheting blankets, and making Christmas ornaments. She loved fishing, working in the yard, and doing puzzles. She was a ferocious Scrabble player. She cared deeply for animals, feeding and tending to the local birds, feral cats, deer, and other wildlife. She especially loved her dogs Maggie, Penny, and most recently, Sugar.

Cathye will be sorely missed by her son Bob Carmichael, his wife Nikkola, and their children, Nathan, Elena, and Talia; her son Russ Carmichael and his wife Melanie; her son Philip Carmichael, his wife Jenn, and their children Joshua and Matthew; her ex-husband, Wayne Carmichael and his wife, Suzanne; her brother, George Cannon; all of her extended family and friends; and her beloved dog, Sugar.

She is predeceased by her husband Joe Baldwin, her sister Gwyn Jones, and her brother Paul Cannon.

Condolences and tributes can be sent online at www.watsonandsonsfh.com. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in memory of Cathye to a local animal shelter or Hospice care provider.

Mom, we will love and cherish you always.

Elmer Roy Broadus

Elmer Roy Broadus, 91, of Joaquin, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023, in Joaquin.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 27, 2023, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Sister Sherry Harding and Bro. Jason Broadus officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Mr. Broadus was born July 29, 1932, in Joaquin, Texas, to Emmett Ramsey Broadus and Flossie Aquila Wiggins Broadus. He attended New London school until the natural gas explosion took place and closed. He then continued school in Overton, Texas. Being the eldest of 9, he felt the need to help support his family by joining the United States Army at 17. After years of serving his country and traveling abroad the world, he relocated to Shelby County. While eating lunch at the local Red Dot Café in Joaquin, he met the love of his life, Linda. After 6 months of dating, he knew she was the one that he could not live without so together they tied the knot on June 6, 1970, and made their home in Joaquin. At that time, he had a job as a pipe fitter offshore where he worked for J Ray McDermott for 20 plus years and retired. He then was introduced to the timber business. If he was driving in a car, you can bet he was checking out all the trees on both sides of the road.

Roy spent most of his time in his later years volunteering and helping others. Through local churches, he traveled several states on missions trips helping rebuild homes, transporting donations and serving others as needed. Roy was the true definition of being the hands and feet of Jesus.

Due to his health decline, his travel slowed but his heart for missions never stopped. In 2010, he began to partner with Shelby County Outreach Ministries, where he assisted many people in the area. After years of dedication and service, he felt like a “big chief” when he was appointed his very own office in 2016. If he wasn’t serving at the outreach, you could find him reminiscing with his friends over breakfast or trying to find the next big deal on a junk car. His famous saying was, “Everything is for sale except the wife and kids.”

He loved people. Doesn’t matter if he knew you or not, he would have something to say. His greatest love was his family. He looked forward to all of the family get togethers and would be sure to know what was on the menu. Although he loved the main course, dessert was his favorite. You could always catch him in his recliner watching sports enjoying his bowl of Blue Bell ice cream.

Even until his last breath, he still was the most selfless man who loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His favorite Bible verses were John 3:16 and Romans 12:1-3. Roy will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda Cummings Broadus; children, Kim Williams and husband Ralph of Benton, Louisiana, Jason Broadus and wife Wendy of Joaquin, Randy Broadus of Nacogdoches, Texas, Toby Broadus of Joaquin, Texas, Bonnie Yount and husband James of Clinton, Arkansas, Amy Clouse and husband Zac of Joaquin, and Monica Lawson and husband Matt of Joaquin; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Jerry Broadus and wife Olene of Carthage; sister Barbara Woodcox and husband Randy of Joaquin; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by parents, Emmett and Flossie Broadus; sisters, Velta Bordner, Gail Broadus, and Margaret Walker; brothers, James Broadus, Bobby Broadus, and Elton Broadus.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons of Mr. Roy.

Our family would like to recognize and give our thanks to Torrie Gipson and Affinity Hospice for their care of our husband and father. We are so grateful for you all.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shelby County Outreach Ministries. Online condolences & tributes can be sent at www.watsonandsonsfh.com

Lisa Goings

Lisa Goings, age 65 of Blountsville, Alabama, passed away on September 28, 2023, at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas.

She is survived by her daughter, Crystal Lewis and husband Jason of Blountsville, Alabama; son, Cory Baxley and wife Brandy of Blountsville, Alabama; mother, Shirley Willoughby of Blountsville, Alabama (originally Center, TX); siblings, Timothy Goings of Houston, Texas, and Tommie Harmel, Jr. of Houston, Texas; and grandchildren, Caley Baxley, Gabriel Baxley, Chloe Lewis and Garrett Lewis.  Honorary grandchildren Nolan and Olivia Moody, Austin Grigsby and Jayden Green.

Lisa grew up in Houston, Texas, later moving to Center and subsequently to Blountsville, Alabama, with her children and grandchildren. She was a truck driver and a home health CNA for many years. She loved to quilt, garden, read and thrift shop. Affectionately named “Maw” by her first grandson, her outgoing personality easily won over members of her community where she was adopted as “Maw” by many. She fought a long, hard battle to continue celebrating and supporting her grandchildren, which was the highlight of her life.

Flowers or charitable donations to the American Liver Foundation are accepted https://alf.social/tributegift in memory of Lisa Goings.
